What makes a fund ethical?
The following approaches are at the heart of the investment process.
Screening
Fund managers will buy shares after a screening process. This can either be positive or negative screening of funds based on set criteria. Positive screening means that a fund may seek to invest in companies making a positive contribution to society, say in the form of renewable energy or waste management.
Negative screening means that a fund will avoid investing in certain agreed areas like the tobacco, arms, companies with poor human rights records, heavy polluters or those that test on animals for cosmetic purposes.
Engagement
In this instance fund managers actively encourage the companies that they invest in to adopt or improve social, and environmental practices. This can involve meetings with senior management and voting at relevant shareholder meetings.
